I have struggled with an ankle for years that turned for no particular reason and resulted in falls, hurt constantly to the point it almost prevented me from walking more than a short distance, and was chronically swollen. Dr. Hegewald found that I had almost no joint space and... read more probably little stabilizing connective tissue in that ankle. We discussed fusing the ankle, or possibly replacing it. When I was interested in a joint replacement, he developed a surgical plan and identified the best device for me. The surgery went fine, and the pain control was excellent. The healing took time and PT but everything worked out great. Throughout the process, Dr. Hegewald was clear, thoughtful, patient, caring and even appreciated my somewhat idiosyncratic sense of humor. His staff were also prompt, respectful and efficient. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

I was referred to Dr. Hegewald after two failed attempts by two different doctors to address my foot pain. The first doctor dismissed me after offering me a foot wrap and telling me she saw nothing wrong. The second said I had two bone spurs and a loose body that... read more would need to be surgically removed. When I continued to have issues for 6 months post-surgical, he threw his hands up, said he didn't know what was wrong, then retired and left his practice before my issues were resolved. I was referred to Dr. Hegewald by one of his colleagues who I was seeing for a hip repair. With my previous experiences, I went into the initial evaluation feeling skeptical, but came out feeling confident with his knowledge and experience. He told me that I had arthritis in my foot joints and that a foot fusion was recommended. He explained my options and weighed each risk himself rather than leaving the hard decision up to me. One of my options was a risky osteotomy procedure which he passed on due to the risk which showed me that my well-being was his number one concern. He gained my trust quickly after that. After months of conservative treatments, Dr. Hegewald performed the foot fusion in July 2022. The recovery was a hard one, but well worth the results. My mobility post-surgery was better than expected and that was a definite plus in my book! Unfortunately, I am also in need of an ankle joint replacement, but he has continued conservative treatments to delay another surgery as long as possible. When the time comes, he will be the one that I choose to perform the surgery. Dr Hegewald is experienced, caring, explains options well and educates patients so that they make the best decisions for themselves. He provided me with a contact number and responds to my questions and concerns quickly. I trust him to make the best decisions for my care and recommend him highly.

Dr hegewald did an excellent job on repairing my ankle. I wasn't able to walk because my ankle was sideways. Now my foot is straight and I will be able to live an active life. I will always be indeted to him.

I can’t express how great of an experience I had with OSM and Dr. Hegewald! I was able to recover from an Achilles tendon rupture and back running in 10 months, but that’s glossing over the actual interactions I had with him and the team. Two weeks after I retired an accident with a ladder left me with a pulverized right heel. That was on a Thursday. My wife and I reached out to Dr. Hegewald and his team found a way to see me the next day early in the morning. ... read more After reviewing the CT scan it was apparent that it was one of the most severe injuries you can have with a heel. Instead of moving to surgery immediately he counseled waiting for swelling to subside prior to surgery. He was very frank and straight forward with me - just what I needed and wanted. The heel almost certainly couldn't be repaired without fusing the heel and ankle due to the damage and he explained this very carefully - so I was fully on board with the surgical plan. His follow up with me after surgery was spectacular and he gave me his cell phone number in case I had questions or concerns about my recovery. It was a long one which is typical but over the months, his care and council made a very big difference in my ability to stay with the plan and following his guidance enabled me to recover nearly 100% functionality with my right foot following physical therapy despite the severity of my injury. He made a very big difference in my life and I tremendously grateful.
