Two weeks after I retired an accident with a ladder left me with a pulverized right heel. That was on a Thursday. My wife and I reached out to Dr. Hegewald and his team found a way to see me the next day early in the morning. ... read more After reviewing the CT scan it was apparent that it was one of the most severe injuries you can have with a heel. Instead of moving to surgery immediately he counseled waiting for swelling to subside prior to surgery. He was very frank and straight forward with me - just what I needed and wanted. The heel almost certainly couldn't be repaired without fusing the heel and ankle due to the damage and he explained this very carefully - so I was fully on board with the surgical plan. His follow up with me after surgery was spectacular and he gave me his cell phone number in case I had questions or concerns about my recovery. It was a long one which is typical but over the months, his care and council made a very big difference in my ability to stay with the plan and following his guidance enabled me to recover nearly 100% functionality with my right foot following physical therapy despite the severity of my injury. He made a very big difference in my life and I tremendously grateful.

In January 2024, I've had a bad fall (doing something so mundaine like taking out the recycling) and broke my tibia and... read more fibula in in multiple pieces. The ER doctor prepared me for a long healing journey ahead as he referred me to the OSMC. The operation with Dr. Hegewald took twice as long as anticipated since he had to, literally, put the puzzle pieces that were my Fibula back together and make sure no bone debris was left behind. Usually, I like to follow my bodies cues with medications in general however Dr. Hegewald's treatment plan was so spot on, I followed it to a T managing post op pain and healing. Both, Dr. Hegewald, and Felicia have been most kind, patient, and encouraging through the entire process, helping me navigating through this experience with confidence. It is now middle of September and I'm happy to report that I've just walked 12.000 steps on Wildwood trail without pain or discomfort. I'm still healing and regaining my full ankle mobility but I can say, with confidence, that if you're in a similar position as me, you'll be in the best hands with Dr. Hegewald.

I found out I had another navicular stress fracture that would need operated on and as a runner and marathoner he knew how hard this was for me. He was very thorough explaining it while also being empathetic to what I was going through. He performed the surgery and I am now 10 weeks post op, you can barely see the scar and just found out on my latest CT scan that there is no sign of a fracture or anything out of the norm which is great news! I am on two feet, in PT twice a week and am progressing well every day. I also has a unique situation because I had to move 2 weeks after my surgery and he was great about getting me in, making me feel comfortable about my recovery even with the move AND checked in with me throughout. He is fantastic. Whether you are a runner or not, he’s absolutely who I would recommend!

Dr. Hegewald performed the surgery on my ankle fracture and I couldn't be more pleased with the results. He was very accessible and willing to answer any questions I had. Always returned my texts quickly. I would recommend him to anyone needing foot or ankle surgery.

I came to Dr. Hegewald after chasing around pain in my ankle for about 2+ months. Every time I tried to run, rest, and try to run again, the pain was pushing an 8 or 9. It felt so good to get a confident, clear answer. His demeanor and expertise eased my anxiety right away, and we moved forward from there. He knew of my goals to run the Boston Marathon a few months from that first visit, and he helped guide me to running it within a reasonable level of pain, with the knowledge that we already planned on having surgery after the race. The surgery was over 4 months ago now, and with Dr. Hegewald’s expert hands and his recommendation of a perfect PT, Mike Cantwell, I have been back running for the last 8 weeks, slowly ramping up my mileage and I’ve been pain free with their help.
