Dr. Hegewald is a board-certified, fellowship trained podiatric foot and ankle surgeon. He completed his undergraduate education at Carroll College in Helena, MT and podiatric medical school at Des Moines University in Iowa. He then went on to complete his foot and ankle surgical residency with Virginia Mason Franciscan Health in Tacoma, WA.
Following residency, he furthered his training by completing the esteemed Silicon Valley Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Fellowship with Palo Alto Medical Foundation focused on trauma, reconstruction and total ankle replacement.
Dr. Hegewald has over nine years of prior orthopedic foot and ankle experience treating year-round athletes in the Gorge where he worked out of Hood River, OR before relocating to Portland, OR in 2021. He provides comprehensive foot and ankle care and offers a spectrum of advanced treatment options. He is board certified in foot, reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.
Dr. Hegewald enjoys kiteboarding, and skiing outside of work as well as spending time with his beautiful wife, son and daughter.

When I fell and broke my ankle, my biggest concern was that I wouldn’t regain sufficient strength and stability to be able to walk as much as I like to walk. Dr. Hegewald was very reassuring.
It took a plate and nine screws to repair my trimalleolar fracture. His confidence, skill, and encouragement put my mind at ease. And, here I am, less than five months post-op, walking as much as I did before. I couldn’t be more pleased!

I had surgery in April, 2024 to remove a bone spur and fix my Achilles tendon in my heel. I broke my leg in four places. They called it a Pilon fracture and it was a limb threatening injury. From the first meeting with Dr. Hegewald things have gone on schedule and as planned. Although my situation was very complicated Dr. Hegewald explained to me very clearly what the procedure would entail. He assured me that he would have me walking again where as the first surgeon I saw said that I would never drive a car again. Dr. Hegewald showed incredible skill in putting my leg back together. Through the x-rays you can see how it’s incredibly straight. Both he and I were very happy with his work. His office and staff were incredibly professional. On every appointment it seemed to run very smooth. Never a long wait to see the doctor. With each visit I could feel my leg getting better and stronger. I couldn’t have had a better experience with such a horrific situation as I was in. A big thankyou to Dr. Hegewald and his staff. I would recommend him to anyone who’s suffered a leg or foot fracture. Thanks again Dr. Hegewald you did an excellent job in helping me get back to my active life.
Dr Hegewald did an awesome job of repairing my ankle! I only have small scar of only one inch or so!! He was easily accessible by text! It was so helpful to be able to talk to him about the healing process, and what I could do. I was able to text him from our vacation in Phoenix to see if I could go into the public pool while my ankle was healing! His team is awesome too! Katie is so friendly!
I cannot thank Dr Kenneth Hegewald enough for performing ankle surgery December 2021. I kept having pesky ankle pain and had torn my tendon 5 times prior and had severe ankle instability. He thoroughly listed to my issues and we came up with a surgical game plan for the best outcome. I wasn’t even thinking about returning to the sport I love, running, but 9 months later post op, I’m back to running. Pain free! If anyone is having recurrent ankle issues or any ankle issues, I highly recommend Dr Hegewald. I even drive an hour each way to see him, and it was worth it.
I was a patient of Dr Hegewald when he was working in The Dalles. Its definitely worth the time to go to portland and see him at his new office to get the expertise treatment and surgery if needed on foot. He cares about his patients and will listens to you.

Entire staff is always very friendly and efficient. They always make sure all of my needs are met, going out of their way to fax things for me to my work and ensuring every detail of my recovery is flawless. Dr. Hegewald is the BEST. He has been my surgeon and helped me through two different foot injuries. He is very friendly and encouraging and extremely gifted. I feel so safe knowing he is my doctor and always feel so relieved after my appointments with him. He remembers details about my life and treats me like a friend. I can’t say enough wonderful things about Dr. Hegewald and his staff.
After losing nearly 50 lbs over the fall and winter due to a renewed effort to stay active and fit, I went to see Dr. Hegewald to see what could be done with my ankles that always hurt. I had been told years ago that I had arthritis in my ankles and was depressed to learn that both of my ankles were in pretty bad shape: Bone spurs, arthritis and instability. Wow. So depressing. Then he tells me that he could fix them and the procedure was pretty routine. “What did you say?!!” He then explains the ankle stabilization procedure and I told him to sign me up!
I’ve NEVER been under the knife, or under anesthesia so I was quite apprehensive. The procedure couldn’t have been easier. I had very little pain for a couple of days and was up and about on crutches on the 4th day and by three and 1/2 weeks, I was walking on it and the ankle feels great! Dr. Hegewald is kind, attentive, accessible, giving me his cell phone number to text or call him if I had any problems whatsoever. I experienced zero problems or complications, but texted him with a question or two and he got right back to me. His staff is professional and courteous. Dr. Hegewald is a professional, an artist. His fees were reasonable. Thank God that there are “foot geeks” in this world. I thought I was destined to live with achy feet the rest of my life. I can’t wait until I get the other one done.

A miracle worker for sure. Last year at this time could not even walk without pain because of flat foot arch. Was effecting almost every aspect of my life. You know the foot bone’s connected to the ankle bone and all the way up to my hips. We tried all the non-surgical remedies and finally had to go the surgery route. Last November Dr. Hegewald worked his magic and rebuilt my arch. It has been a difficult recovery but next month at this time I’m pretty sure I’ll be ready to run a marathon (although I never have been a runner!) Thanks a million and then some to Dr. Hegewald and all his support staff at Cascade Orthopedics!
The surgery at Providence went very well and Dr. Hedewald was great. I’d never had surgery before but Dr. Hegewalds bedside manner was so great that it put my mind at ease.
The whole experience, beginning to end was very positive.
