Specialized orthopedic hip & knee care • Oregon

Hip and knee care for the way you move

Evaluation and treatment for hip and knee injuries, joint pain, stiffness, instability and arthritis, with care shaped around your diagnosis, function and goals.

Care across the full hip and knee spectrum

Hip and knee problems call for more than one kind of expertise.

Pain or loss of function may begin with an injury, a tendon or ligament problem, damaged cartilage or changes within the joint over time. The right pathway starts with identifying the source.

OSM physicians provide care that spans sports medicine, arthroscopy, ligament and cartilage reconstruction, joint preservation and hip and knee replacement. Your evaluation helps determine which options fit your condition and circumstances.

Understand

Consider the history, examination, imaging when appropriate and the way symptoms affect movement and daily life.

Match the pathway

Review nonsurgical care, joint-preserving treatment, reconstruction or replacement according to the diagnosis.

Move forward

Build a plan for recovery and a return toward the work, recreation, sport and everyday activities that matter to you.

Hip and knee treatment pathways

The right treatment depends on the problem

Hip and knee care is individualized. Not every injury needs surgery, and not every arthritic joint needs replacement. Your physician will discuss the options appropriate to your diagnosis.

Nonsurgical care

Many hip and knee conditions may be managed without surgery. Recommendations depend on symptoms, diagnosis, function and goals.

  • Activity modification
  • Medication guidance
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation
  • Ultrasound-guided injections
  • PRP injections when appropriate
  • Return-to-activity planning

Preservation & reconstruction

Joint-preserving procedures may address damaged ligaments, meniscus, cartilage, labrum or other structures when surgery is appropriate.

  • Hip and knee arthroscopy
  • ACL and other ligament reconstruction
  • Meniscus repair
  • Cartilage restoration procedures
  • Hip labral repair
  • Gluteus tendon repair

Joint replacement

When arthritis or joint damage makes replacement an appropriate option, OSM offers primary and revision hip and knee replacement expertise.

  • Total hip replacement
  • Anterior total hip replacement
  • Partial knee replacement
  • Total knee replacement
  • Revision hip and knee replacement
  • Robotic-assisted joint replacement

The procedures available within OSM are not offered by every physician or appropriate for every patient. The care team can help connect you with a provider whose focus fits your concern.

One symptom does not determine one treatment.

Hip and knee care spans more than joint replacement.

A new ligament injury, a hip labral problem and advanced arthritis require different expertise and different decisions. OSM considers the diagnosis, function, health and personal priorities behind each patient’s care rather than beginning with a predetermined procedure.

Common questions

About hip and knee care at OSM

When should I see an orthopedic hip or knee specialist?
An orthopedic evaluation may be appropriate when pain, swelling, stiffness, weakness or instability persists, follows an injury or interferes with walking, sleep, work, sport or daily activity.
Does hip or knee pain always require surgery?
No. Many conditions may be managed with nonsurgical care. Surgery may be discussed when it is appropriate for the diagnosis, the severity of symptoms and the patient’s individual circumstances.
What is the difference between joint preservation and joint replacement?
Joint-preserving treatment addresses structures such as ligaments, meniscus, cartilage or the hip labrum while retaining the natural joint. Joint replacement removes and replaces damaged joint surfaces. The appropriate pathway depends on the diagnosis and individual patient.
Which OSM physicians provide the hip and knee care on this page?
Charles J. Petit, MD provides hip and knee sports medicine, arthroscopy and reconstruction, including replacement. Derek E. Lamprecht, DO provides sports medicine and arthroscopic and reconstructive knee care. Andrew J. Bryan, MD and Steven Dailey, MD focus on hip and knee replacement.
